The Grand Mosque, although not an ancient piece of architecture, actually only 10 years old, is a really incredible building and really worth a browse. Take in the graceful arches and sumptuously decorated interior. This mosque houses an enormous chandelier that is almost 50 foot wide as well as a carpet that is said to be the largest carpet in the world and took 600 women over 4 years to weave. The dome of the mosque is also a sight to behold covered with the most beautiful, intricate detailing. An absolutely stunning place of worship not to be missed.

From your Muscat apartment rental or holiday let take a leisurely stroll along the corniche. Stop at the fish market and buy some fresh produce for tea and admire the nautical theme along the promenade from fish decorated tiles to delightful dolphin statues. Along the corniche you will find some exquisite old houses, one in particular, a 1930s building, has been turned into a fantastic museum, Bait al-Baranda. Explore Muscat’s history right back to prehistoric times and learn about the culture and heritage of this region’s people. There are some really interesting exhibits here including a reconstructed dinosaur complete with roar which is guaranteed to make you jump when you enter the room. A must see.

Continue on to the Mutrah Souq where you will find a collection of shops selling wonderful textiles, frankincense and myrrh, pashminas, gold and sliver, Omani artefacts, nuts and deliciously aromatic spices. Grab a couple of bargains and soak up the traditional atmosphere, just remember to haggle.

Along the corniche towards Old Muscat you will find the old fort and a lovely Portuguese Watchtower from where you can enjoy the most incredible views. If you come here in the evening you will also be privy to the beautiful, illuminated fountains. Quite a spectacular sight.

The corniche also leads to Al-Riyam Park where the kids will enjoy fair rides and looking at the novel giant incense burner whilst you take in the breathtaking harbour views. Watch out for some gorgeous tropical fish in the waters as well as the Sultan of Oman’s impressive Royal Yacht.
