Here you will see some exquisite, traditional Turkish Ottoman architecture. Take a stroll down the narrow, cobbled streets and discover the delightful Ottoman houses as well as Yivli Minare Camii, The Fluted Minaret Mosque. Admire the intricate workmanship that has gone into this mosque, originally covered with blue tiles, some of which can still be seen. The minaret is around 800 years old and a whopping 38 metres tall, sadly the original mosque that the minaret belonged to was destroyed and a new one was built in it’s place boasting six wonderful domes. This building is now home to the city’s Ethnographic Museum and here you can get an insight into the rich history and culture of this region’s people. On the outskirts of Kaleici you will find Hidirlik Tower, an ancient circular tower built in Roman times which was later used as a fort and then, more recently, as a lighthouse.
A wonderful trip back through time and a delightful way to spend an afternoon.
