Serviced Apartments in Damascus

One of the most incredible things about Damascus that you really should experience when renting an aparthotel or serviced residence in Syria’s capital is Damascus Old City. What better place to start your exploration of this incredible region than right in the historic heart.

The walled city of Old Damascus houses a collection of incredible ancient architecture, traditional souqs and an atmosphere that will make you feel like you have stepped back in time. Wander through narrow passages and alleyways and discover doorways leading to lovely courtyards and ancient houses. Although many of the houses have fallen into disrepair there are several that have been renovated including the 300 year old Dahdah Palace. You can take a tour of this delightful residence and also purchase antiques from the friendly Dahdah family that live here. Another building well worth a look is Beit al-Mamlouka. This 400 year old Damascene house has been beautifully restored and became Syria’s first Boutique Hotel in 2005. The interior of this property boasts many original features as well as a most attractive 19th wall fresco.

A few of the other wonderful pieces of architecture to look out for whilst in Old City include The Citadel of Damascus, the underground chapel of the House of Ananias and the Umayyad Mosque where St. John The Baptist is reputed to have buried.

Much of the Old City is inaccessible to vehicles which helps this part of Damascus retain it’s old world charm. Before heading back to your Damascus apartment rental or holiday letting make sure you pay a visit to Souq al-Hamidiyya. This souq is accessed via the roman columns of Jupiter Temple and small passageways run off from the main, undercover street where you will find a plethora of delights including pungent, aromatic spices, intricately carved boxes, silks, leather goods, children’s toys, clothes, carpets, souvenirs and handicrafts to name but a few. As you walk through the souq you will noticed shafts of light seeping through holes in the roofing, these holes are actually the result of machine gun fire from French planes in the 1920s. An interesting and very atmospheric place to visit.

A delightful place in Old city where you can enjoy an evening meal before returning to your holiday let or service apartment in Damascus is Naranj. Enjoy delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, superb Syrian wines, great service and even complimentary deserts. The mezzes and yogurt marinated meatballs are really good here.
