Serviced Apartments in Vitoria-Gasteiz

The northern Spanish city of Vitoria-Gasteiz actually gets its name from combining the Spanish (Vitoria) and Basque (Gasteiz) names for the city. Despite not being very well-known outside of the country itself, this is actually the second largest city in the Basque region and has a population of almost 240,000 people. Most famous for its stunning Gothic architecture, tourists have been booking into Vitoria-Gasteiz holiday rentals for decades to enjoy the sights.

As with virtually all Spanish towns and cities of note, Vitoria-Gasteiz is full of Roman Catholic buildings and influence. This is seen in the city's major landmarks such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, a 14th century Gothic building adorned with statues and intricate detail. To offset this centuries-old building is the more modern Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, still impressive but only built in the 20th-century in a similar style. One of the great things about the city is that almost all of the most notable landmarks are easily reached from city centre (center) apartments in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The heart of the city and is undoubtedly the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. It is in this square that many of the city's old town streets and thoroughfares converge. Nearby to this square you can also find the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Álava, an excellent collection of religious artefacts and paintings detailing the city's Catholic heritage. Stepping out of your Vitoria-Gasteiz holiday apartment, you will be presented with a church of some description within minutes; there are literally dozens in the city.

As well as the city's religious monuments and museums, there is also a strong music culture to be found, with no less than three annual music festivals. During the summer months, the International Music Festival, Jazz Festival and Azkena Rock Festival all take place and holiday lettings in Vitoria-Gasteiz tend to fill up well in advance for these events. The Christian festival of Fiestas de la Virgen Blanca also takes place every August, and is a favourite with the locals.

Your serviced residence or self-catered apartment in Vitoria-Gasteiz can be reached easily either by car, train or air with excellent transportation links in place. The nearest major international airport is in Bilbao, less than an hour's drive away, and also an excellent destination for a day trip. Only slightly further away is San Sebastián, another important and culturally significant city. Generally speaking, this lesser-known tourist destination is ideally located to explore the north coast and Basque country.
