Atouguia da Baleia is a parish in the county of Peniche and here they have their own Patron Saint, Saint Leonard. The Church of Saint Leonard is of Gothic and Romanesque styling and is embellished with intriguing, mythical creatures and human faces. Quite spectacular. If you continue to explore this delightful parish you will come across The Cruise, a tiny house like structure with a pyramid shaped roof and rectangular openings on all four sides where you can look into the building and view a crucifix in its centre. The crucifix is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship with Madonna and child seated against the cross on one side and the crucifixion of Christ on the other. The arms of the cross are finished with fleur de lys flourishes and the pillar on which it stands is adorned with Gothic inscriptions. A truly remarkable little structure.

Another interesting building worth a look is the Chapel of Saint Sebastian and Saint Lucia. This 300 year old structure houses two beautiful tile plaques, each one made up of between 30 or 40 individual tiles, painted with depictions of both the saints, they really are lovely and warrant a couple of snap shots.

These ruins are between 800 and 900 years old and the remains of ancient pottery has been found in the crumbling walls here making this the oldest structure in Atouguia de Baleia. These fortifications were built to protect the residents from marauders and pirates and, although there isn’t a great deal left to see today, it is still well worth a look.
