Serviced Apartments in Cherbourg

Cherbourg (or Cherbourg-Octeville to give the city its official name, more on that later) is a city in the Normandy region of north-west France. An important naval base, the city is easy to reach from other parts of France and Europe with well-established rail and sea routes to choose from. Another choice to make is the kind of accommodation to stay in; many visitors choose Cherbourg serviced apartment rentals as their base.

The official name of the city became Cherbourg-Octeville in 2000 after the two cities of Cherbourg and Octeville merged to create one new city with a population of about 42,000. This made the city the second largest in the Basse-Normandie region after Caen (which is just a few hours away). Of course this created a city with two centres, as it were, with plenty of holiday apartments in Cherbourg and Octeville parts to choose from.

There are a number of ferries operating between Cherbourg and various parts of Europe with sailings to the UK and Ireland taking place two or three times a week. Travel by train or road from Paris is certainly another option and there is a small airport nearby. Arriving in the city you will find plenty of Cherbourg serviced accommodation to choose from and these are some of the best in the region.

There is a lot of history associated with Cherbourg and the surrounding area, unfortunately, much of this is associated with wars and military campaigns. This still leaves plenty of monuments and museums to visit on a trip from your Cherbourg serviced apartment with the Cité de la Mer being the finest. This museum presents the rich history of the city from a maritime perspective.

There is a wonderful selection of public parks and botanical gardens to visit during your stay. Among the many green zones is the botanical garden at the base of the Fortress Hill. The garden also houses a miniature zoo which is great if you have children with you. If you are looking for a quiet afternoon away from your Cherbourg city centre (center) apartment, perhaps a picnic in one of the town’s public gardens will suffice.

Speaking of the Fortress, this strategic lookout sits on top of a rocky hill and overlooks the city. The Fortress now houses a museum detailing the city's military past and the need for the Fortress in the first place. Certainly a great destination for fans of history to visit on a trip from a Cherbourg holiday rental.
